Water woes top corporation council agenda

TRICHY: The acute water shortage and the unclean water supplied to some of the extended areas were among the problems discussed at the corporation council meet on Friday, the first after the parliamentary elections.

The meeting began with a two-minute silence for former MLA Malarmanan of the MDMK but soon descended into chaos with members of rival parties hurling abuses at each other over various civic issues.

When a resolution was passed for laying additional water lines to the newly extended areas, ward DMK councillor Durga Devi, representing ward 47 that falls under the Abishekapuram zone, complained that previously laid lines were not serving the purpose as the water supplied was unfit for consumption.

DO you want to know if your house or family played a part in the lead industry?

Then you have a chance to find out on Sunday, June 29, at the Sinderhope Community Centre, Allendale, when there will be an exhibition on the lead mining heritage of the Allen Valley and beyond.

It will be a drop-in event from 10am until 5pm, and is linked to the Hexhamshire Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project.

Refreshments will be available and Greg Finch will be exploring how the surrounding high hills stoked the burgeoning industrial revolution in his usual very animated way from 4pm until 5pm.

This is an event for all the family. For more information visit the website http:/

THERE are still places on the Hexhamshire Progressive Supper evening which is being held on Saturday, June 21.

Money raised from this event will go to St Helen’s Church, Whitley Chapel.

This wonderful social evening involves dining with guests at two different venues, for the main meal and then the desserts, followed by a progression on to another venue for coffee where all the participants of the evening meet up.

It is an evening of fine food, good company and a really good way of meeting new people. To book your place please contact Steve Casson on (01434) 673463 or email

A LOT of detective research and hard work is being done to put on an event to mark the commemoration of World War One, which will help us to understand what the war meant for a community such as Hexhamshire.

The parish hall will host an exhibition, with some entertainment in the afternoon for school children, and in the evening there will be a film.

Put Thursday, July 17, in your diaries and more details will be available soon.

THE Hexhamshire Leek Show schedules are now available at the church, Dipton Mill pub, or from John Henderson on (01434) 673138.

The show this year will take place on Saturday, September 20, so get tending those leeks and talking to those vegetables. It is nearer than you think.
